For much of my life, I experienced a tension between two worlds: the spiritual life I deeply value and the very practical necessity of earning a living. My spiritual life is the thread woven through everythingthe relationship with my guru, my years in the ashram, and my ongoing exploration of what it means to be alive. It reminds me that this life is not a rehearsal. There will never be another me. And yet, there are bills to pay. Money may not buy happiness, but it buys something I value: choice. A home. Travel. A meal out. A measure of freedom from uncertainty.

For years, I treated these two realities as if they were somehow in opposition. The more attention I gave to making a living, the further I seemed to move from what I considered sacred. And the more deeply I entered my spiritual life, the more uncomfortable I could become with the demands of the ordinary world. But looking backward, I can see something I couldn’t always see while living it: the tension itself was part of my education.

There is a saying I love: “Life is lived forward but understood backward.” At 73, I can see that earning a living wasn’t separate from my spiritual path. It was part of it. Work forced me to deal with uncertainty, responsibility, ambition, disappointment, relationships, and my own attachment to outcomes. It repeatedly brought me face-to-face with the question: Can I remain rooted in who I am while doing what life is asking me to do?

Maybe the sacred isn’t found by escaping the ordinary. Maybe the real challenge is discovering the sacred within it. The meeting. The spreadsheet. The paycheck. The difficult conversation. The uncertainty. The work I don’t particularly want to do. If I need a special place, a special practice, or special circumstances to feel connected to something greater, perhaps I haven’t yet understood the invitation. What if the life you’re trying to transcend is the very life asking you to wake up?
